Braking is one of the most important factors when it comes to vehicle safety, but it is also an important cost factor for the owner. Drum brakes have long been used for heavy vehicles.
When suppliers began developing air disc brakes for towed equipment in the late 1980s, the first field tests were conducted with a TRTA member.  The development took a long time and suffered a series of setbacks, and TRTA was an important sparring partner for the manufacturers throughout this process.

After intensive collaboration with TRTA, and having learnt from experiences in the workshops and on the road, disc brakes began to replace drum brakes in most applications since the beginning of this century. This further improved safety levels. Nowadays, disc brakes have become a fully-fledged counterpart to the traditional drum brake.
