The fact that there are no insurance requirements for semi-trailers in the Netherlands has led to increasingly more problems in the EU where accidents involving mixed combinations from different countries occur. Nor is it possible for Dutch insurers to issue green cards for semi-trailers registered in countries other than the Netherlands, even though the semi-trailer is actually owned by a Dutch company.
TRTA has had frequent contact with De Vereende, the former Dutch Bureau of Motor Vehicle Insurers, in order to remain attuned to further developments on this subject. In Germany, a bill has been submitted to amend the so-called 'Doppelhaft'. It would appear that the insurer of the towing vehicle will also be liable for MTPL coverage of the towed vehicle.
This process is said to be in its final stages. TRTA has once again intensified its contact with De Vereende in the light of recent developments. Although there is still no definitive solution in place as yet, TRTA remains committed to an EU-wide solution.
